Dealing With Pressure 1.
We’ve all felt it at some period of our life.
I felt pressure for the first time in highschool, when I presented my report card to my parents at
the end of the term, I stood before them smelling largely of sweat due to the fact that I had
enjoyed the last day of school thoroughly, in addition to the sweat was just a small whiff of fear.
Upon receiving my report card, my mother’s welcoming smile changed and for the first time I heard.
“What Is this?. The person that took the first position, does he have two heads?”
And that’s how it started. The pressure to be what everyone expects of us.
Pressure can be felt in different ways and can manifest in different forms.
Today, we will be dissecting pressure and addressing it under two headings.
The good and the bad kind of pressure.
Good Pressure.
What is good pressure?
You know that feeling that follows self reflection, when you’ve taken an evaluation of yourself and come up short, you know you possess gifts but you just letting life happen to you. That moment you finally come to the realisation that there has to be more than this mediocrity?. You see that?
That’s the good kind of pressure, the motivation to do and be all that you know that you can be. That kind of pressure puts a spring in your step, energy in your tasks.
You cant wait to fall asleep, to wake up and move in the direction of your aspiration. You’re not threatened by others moving ahead or behind you on their own lanes, you’re encouraged and inspired to move.
Thats the good kind of vibe, pressure. This is what we ought to keep with us everyday.
Then like the scenario I gave earlier, there’s the wrong kind of pressure.
Bad Pressure.
What is bad pressure? –Β Take for instance
“Look at what your mates are doing?”
‘Can’t you see James? Why can’t you be more like him?”
“Your mates are getting married, I don’t know what you’re doing?”
This kind of pressure keeps you awake at night, wondering if you’re losing in the race of life, you start to compare your worst with other people’s best, ignoring the facts that we’re equipped differently and there is something called Timing.
Putting unrealistic expectations on ourselves, making yourself sick, depressed, this kind of pressure that makes us feel resentful and envious about the success of our peers.
That kind of pressure kills and shouldn’t be kept near, life has to be lived on your terms.
I’ll stop here today and in the next post. We will be looking at how to turn off the pressure.
I’d love to hear from you
Peace and love.
