Why do people lack Motivation?
In the preceding part of this series (How to Stay Motivated Always), we discussed motivation and its forms. Now, we will be discussing the lack thereof and the keys you must follow to stay motivated always.
As simple and as nice as motivation sounds, one would think the whole world would be juiced up and overflowing with motivation. Sadly, this is not the case. If motivation could be measured with a thermometer, some peopleâs reading would be subzero. So, why oh why are people short on motivation? There are a few ideas why and weâll look up them in the subsequent lines.
-
The world is not Ideal.
In an ideal world, people would know what to do, people would know what to know and information would be readily available to everyone. In an ideal world, everyone would have lofty dreams and would get out of bed every day to chase their dreams. But the world is anything but ideal.
To some people, the priority is survival. Some are trying to survive until the next meal, some others in war-torn areas are trying to survive till the next day. Life deals a really crappy card to some people and a lot of people would live their entire lives not knowing enough to care about being motivated in the first place. As unfortunate as this is, it is the sad reality of the world we live in.
Â
-
Ignorance.
Some people are not motivated simply because they donât know that they are not motivated and that they could be motivated. They donât know and they donât know that they donât know.
The routinely lethargic lifestyle that they lead is what they have come to terms with as normal. If motivation walked down the road butt naked, wearing a red hat, they wouldnât still be able to spot it simply because they are totally oblivious to the entire concept of being motivated.
Â
-
Lack of Direction.
A lot of people are going nowhere in life simply because they donât know where they are going. They lack a definiteness of purpose and clarity of vision. Hence, they donât know where to channel their energies.
These kinds of people often have a lot of unfinished business and a whole lot of disappointments. This often causes them to shrink back into themselves and they stop trying because they donât know what to try.

Life Happens.
Sometimes, for absolutely no fault of yours, life comes in and whacks you in the head with a sledgehammer. Youâre left stunned and sometimes broken. You may lose your job or business or lose a loved one or go through one traumatic experience or some other depressing experience.
At such times, you often feel like laying on your bed and sleeping for a decade. Some others come up with other coping mechanisms but the long and short is life has left you short of breath. Youâre sad, broken, and donât feel the zeal to do anything. These things happen. We all experience it more than once in our lifetimes.
At times like these, healing is the most important thing. At such times, we need all the external positivity we can get. It doesnât mean that you lack emotional intelligence or that youâre a crybaby. It simply means that youâre human.

How to Stay Motivated
Having discussed the nitty-gritty of motivation and the lack thereof, itâs time to delve into the purpose of the whole article. To stay motivated you should:
-
Desire a better life
. If you are fine with where you are, you will never be able to summon the drive to push yourself into a higher phase. Every change begins with a desire, with ‘a want’, with a need. Until you begin to want something else, chances are that you will remain where you are currently.
Â
-
Dwell in The Midst of the Motivated
. They say that if you roll with five fools for long enough, youâll become the sixth. Same way, if you roll with motivated and driven people for long enough, it will rub off. Winners and losers donât have the same lifestyle, patterns, and vocabulary. If your current crowd doesnât inspire, motivate, or push you, then you need to jump ship.
Â
-
Consume Motivational Content
. You are a sum total of the predominant thoughts that govern your mind. Your mind is predominantly influenced by the information that you possess. If you consume depressing content, soon enough, youâll be emotionally drained and depressed. If you consume motivational content for long enough, it will begin to influence your thinking and hence your lifestyle.
Â
-
Avoid Toxic People by All Means
. Toxic people as the word implies are people who possess poisonous personalities. They poison your mind with self-doubt. These are complainers, fault finders, or narcissists who seek to make your small so they can appear big. They have the problem of every solution and they are eternal cynics. Whatever motivation you can muster, they will drain. For your own safety and sanity, avoid such people.
Â
-
Be your Biggest Fan
. You know yourself better than anyone. Only you truly know exactly what you are capable of. You need to learn to appreciate yourself for who you are and the abilities you possess, no matter how little, insignificant or inconsequential they may seem to be because no one was ever like you and no one will ever be like you.
Celebrate yourself for your own uniqueness. When you have a positive image of yourself, believe me, you can convince and push yourself to achieve anything no matter how daunting it may seem.
Â
-
Talk Yourself Up
. The subconscious mind cannot differentiate between what is real and what is made up. It simply works with the information that is fed to it from the conscious mind. I once heard someone say that you are a product of what you hear and an offspring of what you believe. Please read the last sentence at least two more times.
In essence, if you tell yourself that you are a loser, after some time you begin to believe it. And then your subconscious mind will be programmed to validate the fact that youâre a loser. So, you begin to talk like a loser, walk like a loser, and act like a loser.
On the other hand, if you use positive affirmations and bless your mind with all the positivity that you can muster, like telling yourself how beautiful or how competent and excellent you are, given enough time, your subconscious will begin to work to validate this positive identity.
Â
-
Discover Your Passion
. Nothing will keep you going through the thick and thin than passion. When you are passionate about what you do, you donât require any external push to do what needs to be done because your heart and entire being is connected to your passion.
When you are passionate about what you do, you derive satisfaction and gratification doing it. Your passion is often built around your strengths. For this reason, when you do what youâre passionate about, your personality appears bigger, because your strengths are being showcased and amplified.
Finding your passion in life is one of the most important tasks you will ever accomplish in life. Do not take it lightly.
Â
Your life is totally within your reach. You can become an absolute force, build unstoppable momentum, and impact your world. Find your inner motivation and when you do, nurture it and it will give you the drive you need to accomplish anything.
